Return to GCMIC Programs & Events > International Exchanges

The George C. Marshall International Center’s (GCMIC) Student Partnership Exchange Program (SPEP®) in Germany is now in its tenth year.  The original program was created in 2006 as a key element of the sister county partnership between Loudoun County, VA and Main-Taunus-Kreis, Germany (MTK).   In 2009, the George Marshall Gesellschaft E.V. (referred to as The Marshall Society) was founded to support the partnership between MTK and Loudoun County. Since 2009, The Marshall Society has worked with the GCMIC in support of the SPEPs®.  2015 marked the program's ninth exchange with MTK.  In 2015 the SPEP® expanded to include a new program location in Vaihingen, Germany.  In 2016 a new program location in Garmisch, Germany will be added.

For two weeks in October, German students visit Northern Virginia to experience daily life in America. They live with host families and participate in career exploration experiences that focus on their individual professional interests.  In November, we send our U.S. students to Germany.  Our students live with host families, attend German schools, visit cultural and heritage sites, and participate in career exploration experiences based on their interests.

Many of our students travel to explore a new culture and practice their German, however they do not need to know or study German in order to participate in the German SPEPs®.

For more information about German SPEP® program contact SPEP@georgecmarshall.org or call 703-777-1301.

Vaihingen Application Deadline is February 15, 2017!*

Note that in 2017 our Vaihingen program will not be a reciprocal exchange, so American student's families will not be required to submit a Host Family Application.  Students from Vaihingen visited  Loudoun County in 2016, however, and they and their families are eager to host Loudoun County students in Vaihingen in 2017.

Main-Taunus-Kreis Application Deadline is April 15, 2017!*
