Leesburg, VA – The Board of Directors of the George C. Marshall International Center has selected Jen Easterly, the Director of the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), to receive its third annual Marshall Award in Ethical Leadership. The award will be presented at the Center’s annual gala on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA.

The George C. Marshall Award in Ethical Leadership is presented to one recipient each year who embodies the principles of selfless service, unwavering integrity and visionary leadership exemplified by General Marshall, who was a Nobel Peace Laureate, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. Col. Greg Gadson (U.S. Army, Ret.) was honored with the Marshall Center’s inaugural ethical leadership award in 2022, and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates received the award in 2023.

“Throughout her career of distinguished service to our nation, Director Easterly has been a model of ethical leadership in action,” said Marshall Center Chairman Thomas Greenspon. “Her commitment to selfless service, unwavering integrity and especially visionary leadership is making a powerful positive impact on the security of our country. We are proud to confer our third annual George C. Marshall Award in Ethical Leadership to an individual who has lived up to the lofty standard of General Marshall.”

“I am deeply humbled and honored to be selected for this prestigious award. Learning about General Marshall from an early age, I have consistently strived to demonstrate the values, fidelity, and moral courage that are closely associated with this great leader—from my earliest days as an Army second lieutenant through my service at CISA,” said CISA Director Jen Easterly.

“General Marshall continues to be a role model and example of ethical leadership, not only for me but for millions of others. I appreciate the work of the George C. Marshall International Center that reminds us of his legacy and urges leaders everywhere to inculcate his character traits in their lives and service. I thank the Marshall Center for this award.”

Proceeds from the Marshall Center’s annual gala will be used to support the non-profit organization’s activities, including its growing ethical leadership training program. Five-Star Character: The George C. Marshall Ethical Leadership Conference was created to inspire and develop leaders among high school juniors and seniors. Using examples from Marshall’s long career of service, participants learn and apply these enduring lessons in a modern context. Thanks to donor support, all students attend for free.

Jen Easterly was nominated by President Biden as CISA Director in April 2021 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on July 12, 2021. As Director, she leads CISA’s efforts to understand, manage and reduce risk to the cyber and physical infrastructure Americans rely on every day. Before serving in her current role, Easterly was the head of Firm Resilience at Morgan Stanley and helped build Morgan Stanley’s Cybersecurity Fusion Center.

A two-time recipient of the Bronze Star, Easterly retired from the U.S. Army after more than 20 years of service in intelligence and cyber operations, including tours of duty in Haiti, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. A distinguished graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, she earned a master’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Oxford, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

The George C. Marshall International Center brings to life the timeless values of selfless service and unwavering integrity to develop visionary leaders worldwide. We educate and inspire the leaders of today and tomorrow to live out General Marshall’s enduring example of ethical leadership. We maintain historic Dodona Manor, General Marshall’s home, as a museum and educational facility to preserve the legacy of an American icon who led the U.S. Army to victory in World War II and promoted post-war peace, democratic values and prosperity through the Marshall Plan.
